Website is not just an online presence of any business but it has lot more objectives to deliver / engage its users. A website should not only be very beautiful but it should be fully functional and optimized for pleasant experience of the user. To reach this status of quality a website should follow some principles those are:
1. Communicative informations
Users are generally in hurry to find the information from any website. Therefore, it’s very necessary to present entire information very clearly and in easy to understand way with only required stuff on website to keep user happy. And it’s more helpful for user to understand, if we format our information in heading, subheading, focus content & bullets points instead of long sentences. Also highlight useful information using some CSS tricks which loads fast also.
2. Optimized Navigation
Navigation is the most important part of any website for user to find information easily by minimal clicks. Navigation should be very simple, object oriented and quick to reach required information with optimized task flow after understanding use cases. Uses of bread crumbs, buttons or clickable images are also helpful to reach the goal. We should create navigation understanding our user base segmentation also.
3. Grid Based Layout
We should follow grid based layout to design all pages. Content should be placed in very organised way maintaining white space also. We should use column, sections & boxes in proper balanced manner to design a very clean and clear layout for easy understanding.
4. “F” Pattern Design
The “F” Pattern Design relies upon various eye tracking studies for it’s foundational concept. The eye tracking studies have identified that people scan computer screens in an “F” pattern. seeing the top, upper left corner, left sides and top left to left bottom of the screen. Occasionally taking glances towards the right side of the screen. It means we should place the most important information or elements of our website like branding, navigation, call to action etc. on the left side of the design.
5. Load Time
We hate website that take too much time to load content. To make website loading fast, we should make our images optimized in proper size according to required scale size. Format of images are also effects the speed of website. To do that we should try to understand difference between JPEG, GIF & PNG images. We use JPEG if we have normal colour images on flat background while we use GIF images for images which have less / familiar colours, and PNG are used in case of transparent background images.
6. Informative Images
A picture can convey more message than words. The suitable images according to subject / content give more clear and fast understanding message to visitors of website. It’s understood that finding suitable images are a big challenge,; in that case we can purchase images from stock images websites. We can also use infographics, videos and other graphics to convey our message to visitors.
7. Purpose of Website/Business
As we know that each and every business has its particular users or visitors and every business have some objectives and goals too. We should design our website with fully loaded information to cater the users with minimal design. We should also keep sufficient information to keep users engage for a proper time to reduce page bounce rate, which also helps to rank up website in google search engines. Also increases chances to convert visitors in business.
8. Fonts / Typefaces
We should choose those font families which are easy to read and beautiful in looks also. Mostly we use Sans Serif fonts such as Arial, Tahoma & Verdana etc. We should also not use too many fonts on website. Font sizes should also have 3 – 4 variations; keeping these things in mind we will also be able to make a consistent design layout of website.
Colours play a very important role in any design industry, it also played for usability testing and convey the overall meaning of a brand as well as the mood of the website. Different colour combinations can present different emotions and reactions. Colours also keep information more readable when we use some colour contrasts. While using colours we should keep few concepts in mind i.e. contrast, balance and harmony. Using contrasting colours for the text and background will make reading easier on the eye. Vibrant colours create emotion and should be used sparingly (e.g. for buttons and call to actions). Last but not least, white space/ negative space is very effective at giving your website a modern and uncluttered look.
10.Mobile Friendly Design
There was a time when website used to be used on computers only with same screen size, but these days there are many different devices are being used for visit the website which have different screen sizes also. Therefore, it is important to consider if your website is friendly with those different sizes or not? To do so, we have to build our website in a responsive layout, which means the website will automatically adjust the layout according to the screen sizes without disturbing design / presentation.
By making responsive website, you can help your website be more engaging, useful, and memorable for visitors. Websites that are not well designed perform poorly. A good website ranks up fast on google searches and gives good conversion of leads to business.
